Ornament Thursday's theme this month is...
INDEPENDENCE
Having just moved and still living out of boxes, I have no project for this month... but, also having just moved and our theme being what it is, I wanted to share some of my very favorite words about our country.
I did scrap a page of Addie holding the American flag on our front porch using this back in 2004 when she was not yet 3. When I get back on my feet, I'll post a photo of that layout. I do love that one.
What is America to me?
A name, a map, or a flag I see?
A certain word, "democracy"?
What is America to me?
The house I live in, a plot of earth, a street;
The grocer and the butcher, and the people that I meet;
The children in the playground, the faces that I see;
All races and religions – that's America to me.
The place I work in, the worker by my side;
The little town or city where my people lived and died;
The "howdy" and the handshake, the air of feeling free;
And the right to speak my mind out – that's America to me.
The things I see about me, the big things and the small;
The little corner newsstand and the house a mile tall;
The wedding in the churchyard, the laughter and the tears;
The dream that's been a-growin' for a hundred and fifty years.
The town I live in, the street, the house, the room;
The pavement of the city, or a garden all in bloom;
The church, the school, the clubhouse, the million lights I see;
But especially the people –
That's America to me.

Check out my many OT friends and what they have done to show their INDEPENDENCE!

You are so articulate! I am always so impressed when I read your poetry. You said it exactly! Our lunchroom talk tonight at work surrounded the issue of people in America and jobs - or lack there of. How appropriate is your theme and writings.
Gorgeous poem!! Did you write that? I love it!!!
diane :)
Michelle,
There is nothing more appropriate for the theme of Independence than a front porch and a US flag. Simple, elegant and visually makes the right statement.
Thanks for sharing your house with us. Hope you get unpacked soon!
Cindy
Congratulations on your house move! I hope you love your new home.
Michelle,
Hope the move progresses well. Soon the boxes will be a distant memory and this new place will start to feel like home. And here's hoping you don't find yourself with one lone boot, as I did a few years back. (Really, that boot still haunts me!)
Can't wait to see the scrapbook page! And thanks for sharing your words. Thinking of you!
What great words! And so fitting!
Hope the move went smoothly.
Thanks everyone, but I didn't write this one... wish I did!
The move went well... and Linda, yes, I have a few lone shoes!
